Pottery Square · Bhaktapur

Get your hands in the clay.

Mato means soil. For five generations our family has thrown pots on this square. Sit at one of our eight wheels for an afternoon, or shape a pot here on the screen and we'll throw, glaze and fire it for you.

Wheel classes

Three ways to get messy.

Small classes, one wheel each, aprons and clay included. We fire your best piece and you collect it after the next Friday firing.

Design a pot

Shape it here. We'll make it.

Start from a classic Bhaktapur form, drag its belly, neck and lip on the spinning wheel, choose clay and glaze, and book it into a kiln firing.

From clay to kiln

Every pot takes three weeks.

How we work

Dig & wedge

Red clay from Thimi fields, soaked, sieved and kneaded by foot.

Throw

Centred and pulled on the wheel in a few minutes.

Dry

Ten days in the square's sun, turned every morning.

Trim & glaze

Feet trimmed, handles added, dipped in glaze.

Fire

Friday, to 1,200°C. We open the kiln on Sunday.

Visit

Come and watch first.

Walk into Pottery Square any morning and you'll see pots drying in rows across the stones. Our wheels are in the corner workshop with the blue door. Sit, watch, have tea, then book a wheel.
